Nice Line of Friendship

SUNDAY HERALD SUN: TV EXTRA: INSIDER
(14th June 1998)

FOR all of SeaChange's impressive debut ratings, and the kudos for the adult actors, Insider has been struck by the appeal of the two young actors playing Laura Gibson's (Sigrid Thornton) children. Cassandra Magrath (Miranda) and Kane McNay (Rupert) really make a believable brother-sister combo.

Insider noted at a media function that the pair - Cassie is 16 and Kane four years younger - seemed great mates. Given that most teenage girls would not give the time of day to brothers that age, it appeared unusual.

Individual chats to both revealed a friendship born of spending time together on location.

"He's a legend," said Cassie of Kane. "A real little champion and a good little actor."

Kane offered a similarly flattering assessment of his big co-star - Cassie is 170cm tall.

"We're kind of really, really close," he said. "When we were rehearsing we would go out and get something to eat together and exchange gossip about things that were happening."

It sounded as if Kane did not mind girls at all.

"I'm into girls," he agreed. "But not with someone who's playing my sister."

"I like her (Cassie) because she's not into being a model or anything (like that). She's into nature - she cares about important things."

That is a big wrap from a 12-year-old boy.

When on location, mostly at seaside Barwon Heads, the pair used to also hang out with the show's other young actors - Cameron Nugent, who plays Craig Jelly, and Christopher Lyons, the daggy Trevor Findlay.
They played footy on the beach and were, according to Cassie, "all pretty cool together".

The Gibson children are pivotal to SeaChange's plot, having been forced to leave the city to help live out their mum's fantasy. The roles provide Cassie and Kane with impressively realised challenges.

Kane had already racked up credits in such shows as State Coroner and The Last of The Ryans. In fact, in his first professional role as a street kid in the acclaimed short film It Never Rains, he won an international best actor award.

Between the first and projected second series of SeaChange, Cassie is a savvy street kid with dreadlocks in The Crash Zone. In the 13-part Seven Network/Children's Television Foundation co-production, she plays one of five kids hired to test computer games.

Combined with her first major TV role as a kid with a staircase-fringed haircut in Ocean Girl, Cassie's role as the more demurely coiffed Miranda Gibson in SeaChange (Two, Sunday 7.30pm) seems positively laid back.
